Africa, the mesmerizing continent known for its rich cultural heritage, breathtaking landscapes, and incredible wildlife, beckons travellers from around the globe. If you’re planning a summer vacation in Africa, you must be well informed about the best time to visit. In this comprehensive guide, we will share the various factors to consider while travelling to Africa, explore the diverse climates, and highlight the top destinations to visit during the summer months. Whether you’re seeking a thrilling safari adventure, a relaxing beach getaway, or an immersive cultural experience, this article will help you plan an unforgettable summer trip to Africa.
Understanding Africa’s Climates
Africa is a vast continent, and its climates can vary significantly from one region to another. The equator runs through the middle of Africa, dividing it into the Northern and Southern hemispheres. This division impacts the seasons, with the summer months in Africa occurring between December and February.
Eastern Africa
Eastern Africa, home to countries like Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda, experiences two rainy seasons: the long rains and the short rains. The long rains typically occur from March to May, while the short rains fall between October and December. If you plan to visit Eastern Africa during the summer, it’s best to avoid the heavy rainfall periods and aim for the drier months of December to February and June through September. Kati and I always travel to this part of Africa at the beginning of September and it has always been great. This time of year offers excellent wildlife viewing opportunities, as the lush vegetation attracts a plethora of animals.
Southern Africa
Countries such as South Africa, Namibia, Botswana, and Zimbabwe fall under Southern Africa. Summer in this region extends from November to February. It is a fantastic time to visit Southern Africa, as the weather is warm and wildlife sightings are abundant. The iconic Kruger National Park in South Africa is particularly popular during this period, with opportunities to spot the “Big Five” (elephant, rhino, lion, leopard, and buffalo) in their natural habitat. Having lived in Zimbabwe and South Africa, tourism slows down in the months from May through October, but it is still a great time to visit.
Western Africa
In Western Africa, including countries like Ghana, Nigeria, and Senegal, the climate is influenced by the tropical monsoon. The summer months in this region experience high humidity and occasional rainfall. However, it’s worth noting that Western Africa is not as popular for wildlife safaris compared to other regions of the continent. Instead, visitors are drawn to its rich history, cultural heritage, and vibrant festivals. If you plan to explore Western Africa during the summer, be prepared for the heat and humidity and make sure to check the specific weather patterns of your chosen destination.
Northern Africa
Northern Africa encompasses countries, such as Morocco, Egypt, Tunisia, and Algeria. This region experiences a Mediterranean climate, characterized by hot summers and mild winters. Summers in Northern Africa can be scorching, with temperatures soaring to extreme levels. If you’re not accustomed to intense heat, it’s advisable to plan your visit during the spring or autumn months when the weather is more moderate.
Kati and I have been to Morocco and Egypt and always travel during the shoulder season. Though it still can be hot, there are fewer crowds and lower prices.
Top Summer Destinations in Africa
Serengeti National Park, Tanzania:
Located in Tanzania, the Serengeti National Park is a must-visit destination for wildlife enthusiasts. In the summer months, the park comes alive with the Great Migration, where many wildebeest, zebras, and other herbivores travel across the vast plains in search of greener fields. Witnessing this awe-inspiring spectacle is an unforgettable experience, as predators such as lions, cheetahs, and crocodiles lurk nearby. Explore the Serengeti on a guided safari, stay in luxurious lodges or tented camps, and create memories that will last a lifetime.
Cape Town, South Africa
Cape Town is a vibrant and cosmopolitan city nestled between the majestic Table Mountain and the picturesque coastline. In summer, the city comes alive with a multitude of activities and attractions. Take a cable car ride to the top of Table Mountain for panoramic views, visit the colourful Bo-Kaap neighbourhood, or relax on the stunning beaches of Clifton and Camps Bay. Cape Town also serves as a gateway to explore the nearby Cape Winelands, where you can sample world-class wines and indulge in gourmet cuisine.
Maasai Mara National Reserve, Kenya
The Maasai Mara National Reserve in Kenya is renowned for its exceptional wildlife sightings and dramatic landscapes. In the summer months, the reserve offers thrilling opportunities to witness the wildebeest migration as the herds cross over from Tanzania’s Serengeti. Besides the migration, the Maasai Mara is home to an abundance of wildlife, including lions, elephants, giraffes, and hippos. Embark on a guided game drive or a hot air balloon safari to fully immerse yourself in the natural beauty of this iconic reserve.
Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe/Zambia
No trip to Africa would be complete without a visit to the magnificent Victoria Falls, known as “The Smoke that Thunders.” Located on the border of Zimbabwe and Zambia, this awe-inspiring natural wonder is a sight to behold. In summer, when the Zambezi River is at its fullest, the falls are at their most impressive, creating a mesmerizing spectacle of cascading water. Take a guided tour to explore the falls up close, or for an adrenaline rush, engage in thrilling activities like white-water rafting, bungee jumping, or helicopter rides over the falls.
Marrakech, Morocco
For a unique cultural experience, head to Marrakech, a bustling city in Morocco known for its vibrant markets, stunning architecture, and rich history. In summer, while the temperatures can be high, Marrakech offers a charming ambience with its narrow winding streets, bustling souks, and intricate palaces. Explore the UNESCO-listed Medina, visit the iconic Koutoubia Mosque, and indulge in delicious Moroccan cuisine. Don’t miss the vibrant Jemaa el-Fna square, where you can witness street performers, snake charmers, and local artisans showcasing their crafts.
Our Final Word
Determining the best time to travel to Africa during the summer depends on the region you plan to visit and your preferences for weather and activities. Eastern and Southern Africa offer incredible wildlife experiences during this time, with the chance to witness the great migration, see majestic predators, and explore the vast savannas. Western Africa provides a unique cultural immersion, but keep in mind the high humidity and occasional rainfall. Northern Africa, with its Mediterranean climate, can be scorching during the summer, so plan accordingly.
Remember to research specific destinations within Africa to understand their climate patterns and any special events or festivals during the summer months. Ultimately, regardless of the region you choose, a summer trip to Africa promises unforgettable experiences, breathtaking landscapes, and encounters with the continent’s diverse wildlife.
