With my daughter currently in Kenya in East Africa, we thought it would be wise to share an epic itinerary.  There is something for everyone, with our recommendation for first time safari-goers (Masai Mara) and more seasoned explorers (Tsavo).  We love Kenya and it is still possible to find wild areas to explore and enjoy.  Please add your travel time to each park in your schedule.  So for example, are you driving from Nairobi to the Maasai Mara or being driven?  Where are you staying (we recommend inside each of the parks for the best, most authentic time).  What do you want to see?

Embarking on a safari adventure in Kenya is a dream come true for nature enthusiasts and wildlife lovers. With its diverse landscapes, abundant wildlife, and rich cultural heritage, Kenya offers a truly unforgettable experience. From the iconic Maasai Mara National Reserve to the hidden gems of Lake Nakuru National Park, this epic safari itinerary will take you on a journey through Kenya’s natural wonders.

Day 1 – 2: Exploring the Iconic Maasai Mara National Reserve

The adventure begins with a visit to the world-renowned Maasai Mara National Reserve. Spanning over 1,500 square kilometers, this vast savannah is home to an incredible array of wildlife. As you enter the reserve, you will be greeted by the sight of endless grasslands, dotted with acacia trees and inhabited by a variety of animals.

The Maasai Mara is particularly famous for its population of big cats, including lions, leopards, and cheetahs. It is estimated that the reserve is home to over 570 lions, making it one of the best places in Africa to spot these majestic creatures. In addition to the big cats, the Maasai Mara is also home to elephants, giraffes, zebras, and wildebeests, among many other species.

We recommend Fisi Camp.  A small tent camp within the Maasai Mara.  They have the best trackers in the Mara in our opinion.

Day 3: Witnessing the Great Wildebeest Migration in Maasai Mara

One of the highlights of visiting the Maasai Mara is witnessing the Great Wildebeest Migration. Every year, millions of wildebeests, accompanied by zebras and gazelles, embark on a treacherous journey in search of greener pastures. This incredible spectacle is considered one of the Seven Natural Wonders of Africa.

The migration usually takes place between July and October, when the wildebeests cross the Mara River, braving crocodile-infested waters and facing the constant threat of predators. The sight of thousands of wildebeests running across the plains is truly awe-inspiring and a testament to the resilience of nature.

Day 4 – 6: Discovering the Breathtaking Amboseli National Park

Leaving the Maasai Mara behind, the next stop on this epic safari itinerary is Amboseli National Park. Located at the foot of Mount Kilimanjaro, Africa’s highest peak, Amboseli offers breathtaking views and a unique wildlife experience. The park is famous for its large herds of elephants, which can often be seen against the backdrop of the snow-capped mountain.

In addition to elephants, Amboseli is also home to a variety of other animals, including buffalos, zebras, giraffes, and hippos. The park is a birdwatcher’s paradise, with over 400 species of birds recorded. From the observation points, you can enjoy panoramic views of the park and the majestic Mount Kilimanjaro.

There are a number of great places to stay in Amboseli.  Kati and I have stayed in a few but have no real recommendations.  Find a good mid-level camp preferably with a view of Kilimanjaro.

Day 7 – 9: Unveiling the Hidden Gems of Lake Nakuru National Park

Continuing the safari adventure, the next destination is Lake Nakuru National Park. This small but stunning park is famous for its flamingo population, which can sometimes number in the millions. The sight of these pink birds covering the lake’s surface is truly a sight to behold.

Apart from flamingos, Lake Nakuru is also home to a wide variety of bird species, including pelicans, cormorants, and herons. The park is also a sanctuary for endangered species such as the Rothschild’s giraffe and the black and white rhinoceros. In fact, Lake Nakuru National Park has been instrumental in the conservation efforts of these endangered species.

Day 10 – 12: Immersing in the Serene Beauty of Samburu National Reserve

Next on the itinerary is Samburu National Reserve, a hidden gem in northern Kenya. This reserve offers a unique safari experience, with its arid landscapes and diverse wildlife. Samburu is home to several rare and endemic species, including the Grevy’s zebra, the reticulated giraffe, and the Somali ostrich.

The reserve is also known for its large population of elephants, which can often be seen bathing in the Ewaso Ng’iro River. The river is a lifeline for the animals in the reserve, attracting a variety of wildlife, including crocodiles and hippos. Samburu National Reserve offers a serene and off-the-beaten-path safari experience, away from the crowds of other popular parks.

Day 13 – 15: Venturing into the Untamed Wilderness of Tsavo National Park

The final stop on this epic safari itinerary is Tsavo National Park, one of the largest wildlife reserves in the world. Divided into Tsavo East and Tsavo West, this untamed wilderness offers a truly wild and remote safari experience. Tsavo is known for its vast herds of elephants, as well as its diverse birdlife and stunning landscapes.

Tsavo National Park is also home to the famous “Man-Eaters of Tsavo,” a pair of lions that terrorized railway workers during the construction of the Kenya-Uganda Railway in the late 19th century. The story of these man-eating lions has been immortalized in books and movies, adding to the allure of the park.
