Birdwatching, also known as birding, is a popular recreational activity that has gained immense popularity over the years. It offers enthusiasts the opportunity to observe and appreciate the beauty of various bird species in their natural habitats. From the vibrant colors of tropical birds to the majestic flight of raptors, birding provides a unique and immersive experience for nature lovers.

I have to be honest; I was never much of a birdwatcher, but Kati got me interested in watching and photographing more and more birds.  I think it started when we were in Uganda and experienced a shoebill stork standing 5 feet tall.  It was a thrilling experience, and it raised my interest in birding.

In this article, we will explore some of the ultimate countries that we have gone to for birdwatching enthusiasts, where the avian diversity is unparalleled, and the landscapes are breathtaking.

Costa Rica: A Haven for Tropical Bird Species

Nestled in Central America, Costa Rica is a birding paradise that boasts an impressive array of tropical bird species. With its diverse ecosystems, including rainforests, cloud forests, and mangroves, this small country is home to over 900 bird species. The Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve is a must-visit destination for birdwatchers, offering sightings of the resplendent quetzal, the iconic bird of Central America. Other notable species include the scarlet macaw, toucans, and hummingbirds.

Another place we enjoyed was Fortuna.  With its towering volcano, we had the chance to see quite a few toucans, hummingbirds, and a variety of other colorful birds.

Costa Rica’s commitment to conservation has made it a prime destination for birding enthusiasts. The country has established numerous protected areas, such as national parks and wildlife refuges, to safeguard its rich biodiversity. The Tortuguero National Park, located on the Caribbean coast, is a haven for waterbirds, including herons, egrets, and kingfishers. The Osa Peninsula, known as the “crown jewel” of Costa Rica’s biodiversity, is home to the endangered scarlet macaw and the elusive harpy eagle (though if you see a harpy eagle it would make national news).

The Kruger National Park, one of Africa’s largest game reserves, is a birdwatcher’s paradise, with over 500 bird species recorded. Here, visitors can spot the iconic lilac-breasted roller, the majestic martial eagle, and the elusive Pel’s fishing owl.

Despite its small size, the country is home to over 1,600 bird species, making it one of the most biodiverse countries on the planet. The Galapagos Islands, famous for their unique wildlife, offer birdwatchers the opportunity to observe endemic species such as the Galapagos penguin, the waved albatross, and the blue-footed booby.

India is home to several endemic species, including the Indian peafowl, the Indian roller, and the Malabar trogon.

The Keoladeo National Park, located in the state of Rajasthan, is a UNESCO World Heritage site and a haven for birdwatchers. This wetland reserve attracts over 350 bird species, including the endangered Siberian crane, the painted stork, and the Sarus crane, the tallest flying bird in the world.
