One of our favorite places to travel to is Italy.  I have been to the country probably 30 times or more and Kati is close behind.  As a couple, Italy holds a special place for us, but we have also made some mistakes along the way.  It is easy to feel overwhelmed and just excited to be there but be aware there are some tips to make your trip more authentic and fun.

Italy, with its rich history, stunning landscapes, and mouthwatering cuisine, is a dream destination for many. However, to truly experience the beauty and authenticity of this remarkable country, it is essential to avoid falling into the traps that often plague tourists. Here, we will explore five things to skip when exploring Italy, allowing you to have a more immersive and rewarding experience.

Skip the Crowds: Avoiding Overcrowded Tourist Hotspots

One of the biggest challenges faced by tourists in Italy is the overwhelming crowds that flock to popular tourist hotspots. While iconic landmarks such as the Colosseum in Rome or the Leaning Tower of Pisa are undoubtedly worth visiting, the sheer number of tourists can detract from the experience. For instance, instead of joining the masses at the Vatican Museums, venture to the lesser-known Borghese Gallery in Rome. With its stunning collection of art and limited number of visitors allowed at a time, you can truly appreciate the masterpieces without feeling rushed or overwhelmed. Similarly, instead of battling the crowds in Venice, explore the charming canals of Burano or the picturesque town of Padua, where you can soak in the beauty of Italy without the hustle and bustle.

Kati and I showed up at the Leaning Tower of Pisa at 4pm and walked right in and climbed to the top.  No waiting and no crowds.  Why?  Most the people that were there are on a day trip and heading back.  Busses leave early to get back on the road.  This allows you to enjoy the Leaning Tower almost to yourself.

Don’t get us wrong, we love Rome. But we love Lake Bracciono even more. It is only about 40 minutes away from Rome with easy train access. Authentic and relaxing.

Don’t Fall for Tourist Traps: Steer Clear of Scams and Rip-offs

Italy, like any other popular tourist destination, has its fair share of scams and rip-offs targeting unsuspecting visitors. From overpriced souvenirs to fake “skip-the-line” tickets, it is crucial to be vigilant and avoid falling into these tourist traps. One common scam is the “friendship bracelet” scam, where street vendors forcefully tie a bracelet on your wrist and then demand payment. To avoid such situations, it is best to politely decline any unsolicited offers and be cautious when dealing with street vendors.

Another notorious tourist trap is the exorbitant prices charged at restaurants near major attractions. Instead of dining at these establishments, venture a few blocks away to find authentic trattorias or osterias frequented by locals. Not only will you enjoy delicious Italian cuisine at a fraction of the price, but you will also have the opportunity to engage with locals and immerse yourself in the true Italian dining experience.

And yes, we have “friendship bracelets” and have our share of meals from the “tourist menu”.  Stear clear from both.

My rule of thumb is that the smaller the place, the better the food in Italy. It is not hard to find a good family place to dine.

Italy’s peak tourist season, which typically spans from June to August, is characterized by soaring temperatures, exorbitant prices, and overwhelming crowds. To truly appreciate the charm and beauty of Italy, consider visiting during the off-season when the weather is milder, prices are lower, and attractions are less crowded.

For example, autumn offers a delightful time to explore Tuscany, with its vineyards turning golden and the harvest season in full swing. Spring is perfect for visiting the Amalfi Coast, when the flowers are in bloom, and the temperatures are pleasant. By avoiding peak season, you not only have a more enjoyable experience but also have the opportunity to interact with locals and witness the authentic rhythm of Italian life.

We rarely visit during the peak season.  May and September are our favorite times to visit.
