We have traveled to Alaska and boarded a small plane.  Flying through the Brooks Range, a mountain range in far northern North America stretching some 700 miles from west to east across northern Alaska into Canada’s Yukon Territory it felt like as if we were so close to the mountain tops that we could reach out and touch the peaks.  Our destination was the arctic.  The small village of Kaktovik.  And our goal? To encounter Polar Bears in the wild.

The polar bear is a creature worldwide symbolizing strength and resilience. Its presence in the Arctic has fascinated people for centuries making the opportunity to witness a polar bear in its habitat a truly extraordinary experience.

Thankfully there are destinations across the globe where visitors can observe these animals in their native surroundings.  It was a trip that was both inspiring and eye-opening to the struggles of these magnificent creatures.  The lack of sea ice due to climate change and the fact that the permafrost where the natives kept their food cold and fresh has melted is concerning.  It was inspiring to see a mother with 3 cubs and about 45 other polar bears existing together on this small barrier island on the North Slope of Arctic Alaska.

Understanding Polar Bears; A Brief Overview of Their Behavior and Habitat

Polar bears rank as the carnivores globally and have evolved remarkable adaptations, for Arctic life. With fur and an insulating layer of fat they withstand cold temperatures. Remarkably agile swimmers they can travel distances to locate food sources. While seals constitute their diet polar bears also consume fish, birds and various small prey.

These awe-inspiring creatures inhabit Arctic regions encompassing Canada, Greenland, Norway, Russia and the United States. They predominantly reside on sea ice surfaces where they hunt seals and other prey species.
As climate change causes the melting of sea ice polar bears are being compelled to relocate to land, where they become more susceptible, to activities.

Churchill, Canada; The Global Hub for Polar Bears
Churchill Manitoba is renowned as the “Global Hub for Polar Bears ” making it one of the finest destinations for encountering these animals in their natural environment. Opt for boat tours to get a closer and more intimate experience.

Svalbard, Norway; An Exceptional Encounter with Polar Bears
Svalbard Norway is another destination offering an opportunity to view bears. This archipelago boasts the population of bears globally and provides visitors with safe observation options such, as boats or snowmobiles. The optimal time to plan your visit is, during the period from October to April when the sea ice is sufficiently thick for polar bears to engage in hunting activities.

Kaktovik, Alaska; An unforgettable Encounter with a Polar Bear
Kaktovik, an Inupiat village situated on the fringes of the Arctic Ocean offers an experience with polar bears. Each summer these magnificent creatures gather along the shoreline to feed on migrating whales.
