When I first met Kati, I booked a trip to Utah to experience the Might Five. She was crazy and she actually went and we had a great time and never looked back.
Utah’s Mighty Five are five of the most iconic national parks in the United States: Arches, Bryce Canyon, Canyonlands, Capitol Reef, and Zion. These parks are known for their stunning landscapes, unique geological features, and diverse wildlife. From the red rock canyons of Zion to the delicate arches of Arches, these parks offer something for everyone. Whether you’re looking for a peaceful hike or an adrenaline-filled adventure, Utah’s Mighty Five have something for you.
Choose the Right Time of Year to Visit
When planning a trip to Utah’s Mighty Five, it’s important to choose the right time of year. The best time to visit is typically between April and October, when temperatures are mild and the parks are open. During the summer months, the parks can get crowded, so it’s best to plan ahead and book accommodations early. If you’re looking for a quieter experience, consider visiting in the spring or fall. The temperatures are cooler, but the parks are still open and the crowds are smaller.
We have visited mostly during May and September and both times of the year were great and we always flew into Las Vegas and rented a car and drove to Zion first.
Pack the Right Gear
I am the quintessential over-packer. It doesn’t seem to matter if I am going to Africa or to Utah I always seem to over-pack. Kati is much better than me relative to packing.
When visiting Utah’s Mighty Five, it’s important to pack the right gear. Make sure to bring plenty of water, as the parks can get very hot during the summer months. A hat and sunscreen are also essential, as the sun can be intense. Hiking boots are a must, as the terrain can be rough. And don’t forget a camera to capture all the amazing sights.
Plan Ahead for Accommodations
When visiting Utah’s Mighty Five, it’s important to plan ahead for accommodations. The parks are popular, so it’s best to book your lodging early. There are a variety of options, from camping to hotels. If you’re looking for a more rustic experience, consider camping in one of the parks. There are also a number of hotels and resorts in the area, so you can find something to fit your budget.
We typically camp inside the parks. Check with the websites and find out when the campgrounds are open for reservations. I have literally stayed up all night to get a spot 6 months out.
Take Advantage of Local Knowledge
When visiting Utah’s Mighty Five, it’s important to take advantage of local knowledge. The parks are full of knowledgeable rangers and guides who can help you make the most of your trip. They can provide information about the best trails, the best times to visit, and the best places to take photos. They can also provide tips on how to stay safe and how to protect the environment.
Be Prepared for Unexpected Weather
When visiting Utah’s Mighty Five, it’s important to be prepared for unexpected weather. The parks can experience extreme temperatures, from scorching heat to freezing cold. Make sure to pack layers and be prepared for sudden changes in the weather. It’s also important to be aware of potential hazards, such as flash floods and lightning storms.
One time when traveling to the Mighty Five, we had perfect weather in Zion, but it started to get colder in Bryce. By the time we made it to Canyonlands, it was a full-on snowstorm. We loved it and felt we saw all the seasons within two days. Just be prepared.
